A stunning example of the rather rare 'Chapeau de Gendarme' style of Louis Philippe mirror, (so named for echoing the iconic shape of French policemen's hats!) we estimate that this gilded mirror featuring piecrust plasterwork dates from the mid 1800s.
We have had the plasterwork restored by a master craftsman, but have chosen to leave the gilding as we discovered it - slightly worn in places as we felt this better reflected its age & story: fabulous patina. Still with its original glass & backing.
It's more typical to come across very ornate French mirrors, so it was lovely to discover this much more simple & streamlined style.
Truly something special.
